The Healers: Giving all I got

“Nobody expected Covid-19 to become a pandemic initially. When the lockdown was suddenly announced in 2020, the lack of preparedness affected all of us and as the situation became more serious, our duties also extended. Though the quality of doctors in the country is impeccable and they have given their best during these grim times, we are still short in number and the politics behind healthcare has been a pertinent issue. We are answerable to the patients and their families when the promises made by the government regarding our healthcare do not reach the ground level.

In addition, there is a lot of misinformation floating around regarding the country’s current scenario which contradicts the events happening around us. This gives people a false picture and they end up ignoring the necessary protocols. Misconceptions about Covid care and treatment, especially the panic around the drug Remdesivir has triggered its unnecessary hoarding, affecting the distribution of resources to those who need it!

Amid all this, I hardly have time to take a break. We all are overwhelmed. I remember a case last year where a pregnant lady with MDR TB, who was being treated in our hospital, had a negative Covid result and was recommended to be shifted to another hospital. I was responsible for her transit; it was a fifteen minute ride but she and the baby died on the way. And later, it…
