The Healers: Aftermath

“Healthcare system in this country has always been burdened, but with the privileged now facing the brunt of the system, people are finally waking up to comprehend the gravity of the situation. We have a shortage of basic drugs and equipment to treat our patients in the cities; imagine how grave the situation might be in the rural areas where doctors have to struggle harder!

My female colleagues have told me that, during periods, they have had to wear tampons along with diapers because they did not have access to a proper washroom and could not go back to their living quarters before their 12-hour shift was over. And despite the physical exertion, they have still shown up and done their work. My parents, who are both doctors, also have comorbidity which increases their chances of contracting the virus, yet they show up at the hospital along with me to treat the patients. We are doing the best we can but if we are not given the ammunition, how are we to fight the battle against such a terrible disease?

Even if we do physically win the battle against Covid, we continue to be in danger of a mental health crisis post-Covid. The inability of people to process death imposes massive mental trauma with dangerous repercussions.

I don’t know who is responsible for the crippling healthcare condition in the country in the face of a pandemic. We can all play the…
