The film world
“I inherited the knack for filming from my father and through his constant support and motivation, I decided to carry forward my passion as my profession. I did a diploma degree in applied videography and many short courses in this field from reputed institutes in India including FTII, Pune along with doing a Bachelor’s in Science.
Coming from a Bengali family, education has always been given the top priority, no matter which subject we choose. Going by that, I decided to club my personal interest in film and videography with higher studies. I went for a Master’s in electronic media at Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism in Bhopal which is India’s first university dedicated completely to journalism and mass communication. I wasn’t however very clear about the way ahead; I decided to go with the flow and filled up the form for MPhil inspired by one of my friends.
My research there was focused on the levels of communication in Baul music (a form of Indian folk) for which I even visited Santiniketan during the annual Baul mela (fair) to collect authentic data. When I finally decided to get a PhD degree, the fact that the field of Baul music studies was already quite explored, added with my inherent love for cinema, caused a shift in my research area from music to cinema studies.
