“After completing my Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, I was recruited in a public sector unit as a design engineer. Irrespective of the monetary benefits associated with the job, I felt under-valued in my role which led me to quit my position. As I was preparing to write my GATE examination, I realized that I was inclined towards working on something that had a real-time application in society. This motivated me to take up Biomedical Engineering with a primary focus on artificial intelligence for my Master’s in Jadavpur University. The work that I did there not only piqued my interest in the field but also paved the path for my future PhD on Brain-Computer Interface.

Brain-computer interface is an emerging area of research and my current supervisor, whom I met during my first year of Master’s, is an internationally reputed researcher in the field. Although I had the option to work at IISc for my PhD and was also offered a position in University of Sheffield (UK), my current supervisor was impressed with my Master’s thesis and offered to guide me for my PhD. I already had a head start in the research, so I chose to continue working under him. This decision was met with a lot of skepticism from my peers initially and made me question my decision to continue working at Jadavpur University, but it eventually worked in my best interest.
