I even emailed him once about a problem and he replied back that I could probe more into it. A renowned scientist replying to a 15 year old kid was a huge deal! I was awestruck. Nevertheless, I shifted my gear towards engineering despite having a chance to go to research institutes like NISER, IISER Kolkata etc, because engineering pays better.
After completing my electronics engineering, I got a job as a government officer in the West Bengal State Electricity Department. Before joining the job, I also took a semester course in nuclear engineering at Jadavpur University because I had enough time to kill. It was a fun course and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Then I thought perhaps I should give the UPSC exam. In those days, we could take two optionals, and physics was one of them for me. However, since physics was not my core subject, I wanted to test myself as to where I stood at the national level with those who studied physics. Therefore, I gave GATE and got a decent rank. My educational background allowed me to apply for only one department all over India- Center for Nanosciences at IISc, and that’s how I ended up doing my Master’s and PhD there.
