Joy of reading

“The inaccessibility of good libraries in my town never hindered me from cultivating my love for reading. Most probably, I inherited this passion for reading from my mother. As a kid, I used to see her holding a book on one hand and reading while cooking with the other. I initially became obsessed with reading newspapers and devoured all the stories from my textbooks even before the semester commenced.

Since I inherently loved reading, it helped me secure good marks in school and I was naturally among the top scorers. It is a general norm for good students to opt for Science and pursue it for higher studies. I was initially no different. Like most of my classmates, I even started preparing for entrance examinations and almost stopped reading anything outside of my curriculum. It was during my pre-board examination, when I realized that my academic journey associated with literature was coming to an end; prior to that, I had not even considered pursuing Arts as a career option. I felt a void being created which I wasn’t ready to accept. Perhaps that was my true calling. To almost everyone’s surprise, I decided not to follow the convention and chose what I felt most inclined towards: Literature! It wasn’t like I didn’t enjoy Science, but my love for literature exceeded my love for Science.

This society often fails to recognize that and have a preconceived notion that students pursue Arts…
