“Growing up in a middle-class family in Kolkata, I was captivated by the inspiring tales of renowned scientists from around the world, nurturing a fervent dream of joining their ranks. Successfully clearing the AIEEE engineering entrance exam, I secured admission to Presidency College (now University) in 2004. It was during my time there that I discovered a profound interest at the intersection of Biology and Physics, thanks in large part to the guidance of Prof. Dipanjan Ray Chaudhury.

Transitioning to Calcutta University for my Master’s in Bioinformatics in 2007 marked a significant shift in my academic focus. Despite initial challenges as a Physics graduate entering a biology-centric program, mentors like Prof. Chanchal Dasgupta, Prof. Sudip Kundu, and Prof. Anshuman Lahiri provided invaluable support, guiding me through the transition and ultimately helping me achieve the distinction of silver medalist.

My journey took a pivotal turn during a summer internship at IISc Bangalore, where I gained exposure to machine learning applications in biological research. Though my initial aim was to pursue a PhD abroad, I made the decision to join IISc. Despite challenges such as the absence of a defined project and navigating interpersonal dynamics within the laboratory, the experience was enriched by the talented colleagues who became invaluable collaborators.

Financial strains compounded the difficulties, with fluctuating salaries and unforeseen expenses posing significant hurdles. Grateful for the support of friends and mentors like Prof. Udupi Ramagopal, whose generosity and mentorship eased the burden, I emerged from this period with invaluable lessons on resilience and financial management.

Graduating in 2016, I embarked on a postdoctoral journey at Emory University, where I further honed my skills in structural biology and biochemical techniques. This period not only expanded my scientific expertise but also reinforced the importance of mentorship and collaboration in scientific pursuits.

Today, as an instructor and incoming assistant professor at Emory University’s Biochemistry Department, my research endeavors focus on integrating computational and experimental approaches to unravel the mechanisms of diseases and drive drug development. With a passion for multidisciplinary research and a commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists, I eagerly anticipate the establishment of my own research group this year.

Beyond my scientific pursuits, I find solace in cultural interests shared with my partner, Rita, as we immerse ourselves in Bengali soap operas like “Phulki” and “Neem Phuler Madhu.” These moments of respite serve as a reminder of the importance of balance and cultural connection amidst the demands of research.

In conclusion, I emphasize the critical need for strategic investment in scientific research in our country. By fostering an environment that supports talented scientists and provides ample resources for innovation, we can propel India towards scientific excellence on a global scale. With unwavering dedication and a collaborative spirit, I am confident that Indian scientists will soon rival their counterparts in the US and Europe, driving progress and innovation for the betterment of society.”
