“Coming from a rural background, my parents expected me to get into something stable like teaching in school. Hence they were a little disappointed when I told them that I wanted to pursue a PhD, but nonetheless were supportive. I thought of getting a scholarship equivalent to a teacher’s salary and then opt to choose my passion of doing research on chemistry, an interest inculcated by my school teacher.
