Creating magic with logic
“I have always loved creating things. I fell in love with mathematics through number theory problems that a friend in school would give me to solve. Mathematics, I realized, allowed me to be creative within the framework of some rules and regulations and I found that beautiful.
I currently work on logic which is about the formal process of what mathematicians do to get to an answer. It blows my mind to think how we even came to create an entire field of mathematics just based on this.
Although I had aspirations to go to the US for a PhD, I realized four years of computer engineering at BESU Shibpur and two years of mathematical training at CMI hadn’t prepared me for that difficult journey. I wanted to be in a place which provided familiarity so that it was easier to focus solely on my work.
But I had a burnout very early on in my PhD because I tried very hard to follow the advice of my advisor- achieving an 8 hour workday. In order to de-stress, I started playing badminton everyday. It helped me feel somewhat accomplished even on days when there was little to no progress on the work front. I have now realized training the mind and body are connected and it is very important to be physically active to perform optimally well in other areas.
